Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) and Praxim SA today annouced that they have agreed to continue collaborating in the enforcement of U.S. Patent No. 5,447,154 (the '154 patent), which covers image guidance for certain medical procedures. Varian currently is the exclusive licensee of the '154 patent in the field of radiotherapy, and is licensed to make products for image-guided radiotherapy such as the company's SonArray TM patient positioning platform. Recently, Varian and Praxim together filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission against Resonant, a Canadian company, in connection with the '154 patent. The patent dispute was subsequently settled on April 6, 2006. Varian and Praxim have agreed to continue cooperating in the enforcement of the '154 patent in any future cases where they believe it is being used without a license.
